An active young family with three children were looking to make their newly purchased home (though the home itself was not so new) open up to serve their daily life, but also be a joyful and peaceful respite. It was inevitable to become a full renovation to allow for once enclosed spaces that harkened another era to break open to larger, functional spaces, where each family member (yes, even the baby) had a little piece of their own oasis. Not pictured: family recreation room, girls’ sunroom, AuPair suite, outdoor yards.

Serving as lead designer for Kylee Shintaffer Design, there is no surface, nor detail that was left untouched. If it isn’t new, it was restored and refreshed, like the old growth hardwood floors and historic plate glass windows throughout (though seven new windows were added). Custom, bespoke furnishings were designed, drafted, and coordinated with artisans, each paint hue carefully selected and paired, moldings, trim, paneling calculated to the sixteenth of an inch, every furnishing and art piece (where lighting fixtures in itself are an art form) specified, and flows of space programmed for the family’s personal needs now and for later—a modern family in a historic, now timeless, home.
